103 SBB Stellwerk 2 Winterthur
Stellwerk 2 builds on the established architectural logic of the station frontage, extending it with a new conclusion to the northern building sequence. Through a series of projections and recesses, it interlocks with the adjacent Stellwerk 1, while its stepped height responds to the surrounding context — from the historic station building to the more recent entrance portals on the forecourt.
The new structure rises partially above an existing relay room, whose load-bearing capacity dictates an irregular column layout.
A continuous truss band reconciles these constraints, distributing building loads evenly — making the tension between urban ambition and found ground conditions legible within the structure itself.
The truss wraps the two office floors and channels loads down to five columns. Upper floors are placed on this structural ring in a fine grid, while the ground floor below remains entirely column-free and freely adaptable. Across all levels — office and residential alike — structural elements are integrated into the building envelope, leaving floor plates open and flexible throughout.
