Competition for the extension of the Kappelerhof school complex

The design responds to the existing buildings and the location next to the church with a clearly defined structure. A perimeter row of trees, along with the existing street trees, is preserved, contributing to both spatial quality and acoustic buffering.

Towards the noisier side, the new building forms a more closed, robust volume, acting as a “strong back.” Behind this, the spaces open up with increasing transparency, particularly towards the courtyard and the church. The courtyard is conceived as a new open space with simple, usable surfaces and play areas.

The building volume and façade rhythms relate to the existing context. Distinct, solid elements structure the circulation, while technical installations such as rooftop ventilation are deliberately expressed. A canopy connects the existing building with the new extension, creating a shared entrance identity.
