Hochbergerstrasse 158, Basel – Communal Living and Working
Built in 1965 as the administrative headquarters of the Swiss Rhine Ports, the building on Hochbergerstrasse lies along the Wiese river between the village of Kleinhüningen and the future Westquai neighbourhood. The owner is converting it into an innovative house for communal living and working for small households.
The project responds to pressing questions in contemporary housing: rising costs, growing numbers of single-person households, and an increasing need for affordable small apartments. At the same time, it addresses the blurring boundary between living and working in a digital age. Community-oriented spatial structures create room for neighbourly exchange, shared activities, and new forms of local employment.
The conversion — stripping the building back to its shell — sets high demands on sustainability and economic efficiency. The brief calls for sufficient, climate-conscious construction with architectural quality, contributing to the development of the neighbourhood as part of the Canton of Basel-Stadt's 1000+ housing programme.

Der Entwurf des neuen Stadions integriert sich harmonisch in die umgebende Landschaft und Topografie. Die Gebäudegeometrie greift die charakteristische Flächigkeit des Sportparks und des Mauerparks auf und überführt sie in ein zeitgemäßes, barrierefreies Konzept. Der historische Kontext bleibt für die Nutzer erlebbar. Der zentrale Boulevard verbindet das Stadion mit den Sportpark-Gebäuden und schafft eine attraktive Begegnungs- und Aktivitätszone. Das asymmetrische Stadionvolumen öffnet sich zum Boulevard hin, während die Erschließung durch zwei Rampen entlang des Trümmerhügels eine uneingeschränkt inklusive Zugänglichkeit für alle Nutzer gewährleistet.
