Bergdörfli Housing Estate

Entlisberg is a typical cooperative housing district that has been developed since the 1930s in the spirit of the garden city as a coherent residential neighbourhood.

The cooperative Im Bergdörfli 8 is considered an early example of this approach, shaped by the traditional “Heimatstil” of the time. The new building takes up these historical references and reinterprets them in a contemporary way.

Instead of a single building volume, the design forms a sequence of five clearly legible houses. Set-back stair cores and topography-driven height shifts structure the volume and enable garden-oriented living with a direct relationship to private and shared outdoor spaces. Corner windows and flowing floor plans strengthen the connection to the surrounding landscape.

Above a concrete basement, the building is constructed in timber. A lightweight, colour-differentiated envelope unifies the volumes while emphasizing their articulation. Coloured soffits, expressive downpipes, and lightweight balcony structures define the character, resulting in a layered, polychromatic garden house.
