Living on Top of the Warehouse

The Attisholz complex in Riedholz, on the site of the former cellulose factory, was set to be expanded vertically. Stücheli Architekten, timber builder Blumer Lehmann, and contractor Anliker won the competition.

Located four kilometers from Solothurn along the Aare, the site is being transformed from an industrial area into a dense, vibrant small town. The competition for the warehouse—the final part of the first phase of the “Attisholz-Areal 2045” plan—was completed, envisioning around 100 apartments and commercial spaces.

A workgroup competition invited five interdisciplinary teams to propose solutions for adding floors to the existing warehouse, integrating architecture, structural planning, prefabrication, sustainability, and cost efficiency. The jury included experts in architecture, urban planning, engineering, ecology, and economics, alongside local authorities and the property owner.
