Steinenvorstadt 5, Basel – Renovation and Adaptive Reuse

The project transforms Küchlin’s Variété into a building with 40 apartments and commercial spaces while preserving the strong rhythm of its original façade. The west and east elevations retain their distinct characters: the west-facing broad street frontage remains bold, while the east-facing narrow alley anticipates a greener, more residential character. The sloped roof over the first attic floor is retained, contributing to the building’s energy performance, while the flat roof is reimagined as an intensive rooftop garden – a lush, enclosed green space.

Seven above-ground and five underground levels accommodate diverse uses. Internal circulation is adapted to each level: flexible escape routes in the basement, and centrally located stairwells and lifts upstairs maximize daylight, accessibility, and efficient layouts. Apartments emphasize spatial efficiency and careful use of façade openings.
