New Lucerne Theater
Building on contemporary theater concepts and the unique urban context, a new theater is taking shape, integrated as a prominent urban stage within Lucerne’s cultural landscape.
The theater is situated along the “cultural axis” by the lake and Reuss River, stretching from the Richard Wagner Museum, past the KKL Lucerne, to the Jesuit Church, the Marian Hall, the old university, the Lucerne Natural History Museum, and reaching the St. Karl Church.
The building literally traverses the city: an open passage links interior and exterior spaces, making the theater approachable, intriguing, and inviting at all times. It responds to the rhythm of the city, becoming part of its vibrant life.
Flexibility and adaptability define the design: halls and performance spaces can be used in multiple ways, accommodating a wide range of contemporary productions. The spatial organization is conceived as an open, permeable setting that encourages creative use.
The architectural expression of the theater arises directly from the structural requirements of program and site—rooted in a consistent, functional language rather than picturesque imagery.
